Swoon.
This is just what I needed to read. It's silly, it's slightly over the top but, most of all, it is utterly romantic.
I laughed, I raged, I let out more than one squee!, I even cried a little.
All of July I was feeling a bit like Ransom, the hero of our story. Angry, jaded, completely pessimistic. I only read one book and it was an incredible disappointment. But August came around along with the weekly Smart Bitches newsletter. Something about this book called me, above the $2.99 price, so I went for it.
COMPLETELY WORTH IT.
Izzy and Ransom were delightfully flawed characters and so easy to love. Izzy is a strong, brave yet sweet heroine who will not be deterred by the many setbacks she faces. Ransom, like I said before, is a pissy man who just wants to be left alone in his molding, decaying castle.
Their banter is hilarious.
"It's no use being stern," she told him. "Glower all you like, but for heaven's sake, you gathered me into your arms and carried me in from the rain. I could swoon all over again just thinking of it."
"Don't mistake that for chivalry."
"Then what was it?"
"Practicality. I couldn't have simply left you there. You would have attracted vermin."
Their romance is organic. Their sex scenes are steamy and laced with a heart-wrenching quality that was catnip to me.
Sure, there are instances you might have to suspend your belief just a little bit. The cast of secondary and tertiary characters can be somewhat insane, akin to the nuttiness found in a Julia Quinn novel. But, who cares? This is just so delightful!
